Mazak is the brand of Yamazaki Mazak Corporation, a Japanese machine tool builder headquartered in Oguchi, Aichi, Japan. The underlying company was founded in 1919 in Nagoya, began building lathes and milling machines in 1927, introduced the Mazak brand name in 1963, and delivered its first NC lathe in 1968 and its first machining centre in 1970. According to the manufacturer, the current programme covers CNC turning centres, vertical and horizontal machining centres, multi-tasking machines, 5-axis machining centres, laser processing machines, CNC systems and flexible manufacturing systems.
Main machine groups on the used market
CNC turning centres — the Quick Turn family (introduced in 1981) is the backbone; used offers commonly include Quick Turn Nexus-class machines with milling spindles and sub-spindles, for chuck and shaft work.
Multi-tasking and 5-axis machines — the Integrex line combines turning, milling, grinding and in-process measurement in one setup.
Controls — Mazak's own Mazatrol CNC, launched as the conversational MAZATROL T1 in 1981. On used machines you will meet everything from 1980s–90s M-series controls (e.g. Mazatrol M32B) to later Smooth-generation CNC; all can also run standard EIA/ISO part programs.
Buying a used Mazak — what to check
Control generation first. Ask for the exact Mazatrol model and software version. Older controls may lack networking or modern storage, and their drives, boards and CRT displays are the hardest parts to source.
Spindle and turret (turning centres). Listen for bearing noise cold and at top speed, check chuck clamping pressure and turret index repeatability. On mill-turn machines, test the sub-spindle and Y-axis for backlash.
Wear parts on machining centres. Check ballscrew backlash, way cover condition, spindle taper wear, ATC cycle reliability and coolant intrusion into the electrical cabinet.
Build sheet / option list. Mazak machines are heavily optioned (presetter, bar feeder interface, chip conveyor, probing, tool monitoring). Verify which options work — identical base models can differ substantially.
Run-off. Ask for a test cut and check part roundness, positioning repeatability and surface finish.
Records. Maintenance history, hours and any spindle or ballscrew rebuilds affect value on the secondary market.
What is Mazatrol? Mazak's own CNC system, launched in 1981 as a conversational control: the operator describes the part in plain terms and the control generates the machining sequence. Later generations also run standard ISO/EIA G-code. On a used machine, confirm which programming modes and interfaces it supports.
Is a Mazak from the 1990s still practical? Mechanically, these machines are often still viable; the constraint tends to be control electronics and drives. Price out what works today (screen, drives, memory, DNC) versus what would need repair or retrofit.
Which Mazak machines are easiest to find used in Europe? Turning centres — above all Quick Turn machines — and vertical machining centres are the most frequently traded Mazak machines; multi-tasking Integrex-class machines appear less often and hold more value.
